Extraterrestrial life: Fact or fiction – Part 5

By admin On July 24th, 2009

I’m a scientist. I am also an individual with common sense. It would defy all logic if we were the single planet in the vast multiverse capable of sustaining life. We have discovered a few extraterrestrial species in our own solar system; so how can there not be in others?

The extraterrestrials known to us originate on the planet Mars. They are microscopic organisms, not little green men or some other ridiculously complex type of organism; nor are they beings intent upon destroying us and inhabiting our planet. The planet Mars exhibits signs of presence of water, which is the prerequisite for sustainable life, as far as we understand of our Earth lifeforms. As with our planet, prehistoric evidence shows that some sort of calamity occurred that destroyed all life on the planet at that point in time.

I am not an atheist, nor am I blindly religious. I believe in God because there is proof of existence of an omnipotent, omnipresent force in everything that exists. Whether or not people choose to try to apply boundaries and limits to such an entity using books and threats is entirely up to them if it helps them to more fully or understandably appreciate God. I am a scientist and I believe in whatever is proven to exist. I am also not a foolish scientist who holds the concept that science and God are distinct from one another or contrast in any way. From all my experiences in life, science is just a way to help people understand God, just like religion.

Evolution is fact. It is a part of the great chain of life that continues. All microscopic lifeforms, given time and a stable environment, whether extreme or not, can develop to adapt to a particular life. Also, there are bound to be other planets in the universe that are far older than those in our solar system and have many different environments and natural resources that we could only dream of understanding. The existence of organisms on our planet before the homo sapiens species as we know it today is also fact. There was a calamity that erased life on our planet. Today we stand on a world filled with flourishing life (despite human impact on all other life). The same is possible for Mars, given a few billion years; and the same is likely to have happened on any other planet in the multiverse that is even older than Earth.

Now, I am not an astrobiologist or a microbiologist, I am a medical student. But naturally, any type of biology would be intertwined with my life searches. So I can safely say that there is enough geological and fossil evidence from Mars to prove that extraterrestrial life exists within our own solar system. Perhaps someday, with the advancement of technology, we may be able to prove or disprove the existence of it on planets elsewhere in the multiverse.

UFOs: A scientific point of view

By admin On July 24th, 2009

UFO’s, Unidentified Flying Objects, have been reported by humans since men of ancient times first looked into the sky. Possibly the first documentation of UFO sightings were found carved into the rock in the granite mountains of China. The carvings, made by Neanderthal man some 47,000 years ago, depict cylindrical objects with what might be their extra-terrestrial occupants. If so, UFO’s predate the emergence of modern man.

There have been sightings of UFO’s throughout history, yet the number of sightings has increased since World War II, along with the attention given them by the Air Force and other military institutions in many countries. The term UFO is little more than 50 years old. The term was designated to replace the original term “flying saucer” coined in 1947 after private pilot Kenneth Arnold reported seeing a cluster of nine crescent shaped objects. He estimated the objects to be traveling at roughly 1,000 mph, significantly faster than any terrestrial aircraft was capable of doing at the time. Originally, UFO’s were thought to be an American phenomenon, although over the years, UFO’s have been documented in nearly every country around the globe.

According to a 2001 Gallup poll, 33% of Americans believe in UFO’s. The term UFO has come to imply a spaceship or vehicle of extra-terrestrial origin, even though more than 90% of the UFO’s become Identified Flying Objects once investigated and can be anything from airplane landing lights to weather balloons.

With thousands of sightings occurring annually around the world, why doesn’t science study them? The heyday of UFO sightings occurred from 1950 to 1960′s. The phenomena were studied by government funded agencies and privately supported panels of scientists. From 1951 to 1969, the government investigated UFO sightings through Project Blue Book. Of the 12,618 reported sightings, 701 remain unidentified. Proponents of UFO’s cite Project Blue Book as a government cover up to explain away UFO sightings while the real studies were being done elsewhere.

In December, 1968, a sub-committee was formed by two committees of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). The Committee on Atmospheric Environment and the Committee on Space and Atmospheric Physics established a joint subcommittee to focus on the study of UFO’s. The panel was made up of notable members of the scientific and engineering community. The conclusions of the subcommittee were that the UFO issue cannot be

The best UFO books

There are many reasons to read UFO books. You might want to learn more about another point of view, might want to help yourself decide if life on other planets exist or you might just want a really good read.

But, where in the world of UFO books do your start? Consider these three books that have heavily influenced many other UFO books:

“Chariots of the Gods?” (1968) by “Erich Von Dainekin.

“UFOs: A Pictorial History from Antiquity to the Present” (1979) by “David C. Knight.

“Communion: A True Story” (1987) by “Whitley Streiber.

If you look in the bibliographies of many UFO-flavored books, there’s one title that seems to popup over and over again “Chariots of the Gods?” by Erich Von Dainekin. This worldwide bestseller has since had its thirtieth anniversary edition printed, which shows there is just as much demand for it now as in 1968.

This is the book that began to ask questions about why UFOs bother coming to Earth in the first place. The hypothesis is that the human race has been benefited in one way or another from alien intervention, based on mythology, ancient architectural mysteries like the Pyramids and bits of pottery. This is one book that other authors keep referring back to, whether or not they are believers or skeptics.

Eleven years later, author David C Knight presented us with “UFOs: A Pictorial History from Antiquity to the Present.” This was a big, hardcover book that featured plenty of photos and images. This book is notable not just because it’s a lot of fun, it’s also a good reference point. I first read it when I was in elementary school and have fond memories of it many years later. This is one book I regret sending off to the garage sale.

And no list of essential UFO reading would be complete without “Communion: A True Story” by Whitley Streiber. If you ever wanted to know what it was like to be abducted by aliens, now you’ll know. The book became so infamous that even if you haven’t read it, you are most likely familiar with it through similar books or through parodies of it. You may prefer “Communion” (1989) “the movie starring Christopher Walken.

The best UFO books are the ones you can get for free. There are many volumes in UFO literature and online, and they all have slightly different points of view and details, but their cost is usually the same out of this world. If you are interested in UFO books, try to get the most recently published one you can find, as this will have the most up to date information.

UFOs (unidentified flying objects): Fact or fiction?

By admin On July 24th, 2009

After meeting a stranger named Gorko just outside Bandera, Texas in 1985 while on a cat fishing trip, Gorko advised me that he had crash landed some thirty minutes earlier that afternoon in his UFO. I advised Gorko that this was no time for clowns I was trying to catch my limit in cat fish. Gorko said he was not a clown from outer space and that he was dead serious. He assured me that he could show me his UFO and that UFOs exist for real. Besides he reasoned, if anyone has ever seen something they could not identify flying through the air it would, by definition be, a true Unidentified Flying Object. I could see that I was losing ground fast and conceded the point.

Gorko further reasoned that from his past secret excursions in my country most people could not identify a good presidential candidate to vote for, much less identify most flying objects. He said that he needed a carburetor for his UFO so that he could fly on to Roswell and would be most appreciative if I would assist him in this effort. I asked him what kind of manifold he had on his engine and he said just single as with the price of gas on this planet he could not afford a dual. I told Gorko to buzz off and at that instant there was a numbing feeling in my head that caused me to pass out. After three hours I awoke to a pile of Model A Ford parts and a stripped engine lying next to me. The cat fish I had caught were eaten to the bone and two empty Lone Star long necks lie in witness of the feast that had taken place. Suddenly I saw a flash and a rising arc of light traveling at supersonic speed toward the heavens. I had to admit, that was an Unidentified Flying Object.

Until you have experienced a sobering incident like this you may find it hard to believe in UFOs. UFOs seem impossible until one realizes that we send space vehicles into space on a regular basis. If we admit that there are literally millions of far off planets, suns, moons in the many galaxies throughout the universe, the probability of only one, earth, having life forms as we know them lies somewhere well outside the bell curve. That does not take into consideration unknown life forms.

If there are life forms on other celestial bodies it is not too far a stretch of the imagination that they have developed some form of transportation. Maybe even a flying machine. It is doubtful that the lines of design of such a machine would fit the design curves of our transport vehicles. Style is formed by the creator of the vehicle and aerodynamic considerations. Thus, if we happen to see one of the machines cruising in our airspace and don’t quite know what it is it qualifies as a UFO.

I can assure you that many UFOs have been sighted near Area 51 over the years and in truth, even commercial airliners have been spotted and reported as UFOs. Admittedly most of these did not have a cat fish thief named Gorko character flying them. But who is to say that some were not real UFOs. Especially in an area where we cannot even find a lost millionaire pilot. Maybe he did not want to share his fish with Gorko after his crash.

So until we Earthlings are able to define without exception what a UFO is and discern what we ogle in the sky I, for one, am going to say that it is highly probable that Gorko was for real and UFOs exist. However, I am a weird catfish eating, Lone Star guzzling, crazy Texan at times.

Is There Anything Out There?

According to a recent Roper poll, an estimated 19 million Americans say they have seen an unidentified flying object, or UFO. Another 4 million people claim they have been abducted by alien spacecraft (Clark 267). Can all of these people be wrong?

According to the Chicago based J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Research: “the majority of sightings generally prove to be a misinterpretation of natural phenomena meteors, planets, stars, odd clouds or manmade objects such as airplanes, balloons or satellites. Smaller number of reports cannot be investigated properly for various reasons lack of pertinent details, for example, or inaccessibility of witnesses. However, in any given number of UFO reports, about 5 percent to 10 percent are truly puzzling These cases are considered true UFO reports (Clark 275).”

Numerous sightings can be explained or have been a hoax, but what about the other 5 to 10 percent that cannot be explained? Although the majority of UFO sightings and abductions can the explained, the existence of extraterrestrials and UFOs is a legitimate possibility that should be taken seriously by the public.

What is a UFO? Edward U. Condon, the head of the largest single scientific project ever undertaken about the UFO problem, has his own definition. Condon says, “A UFO is the stimulus for a report made by one or more individuals of something seen in the sky (or an object thought to be capable of flying but seen when landed on the earth) which the observer could not identify as having an ordinary natural origin” (Scientific).

The UFO debate is not a new one. Evidence shows ancient civilizations may have been in contact with them. Theorists attribute many of the ancient wonders to be formed with the help of extraterrestrials. Examples of these are Stonehenge in England, pyramids in Egypt, the Mayan ruins, as well as others. The argument is that there is no way these civilizations could construct such marvelous monuments without some type of help. There has also been evidence published that UFOs were seen during the time of Charlemagne in the 8th century: “During the reign of Charlemagne, spacecraft took away some of he earth’s inhabitants to show them something of the way of life of space people. There events are described in the Comte de Gabalis’ Discourses. However, when the space craft returned bringing back the Earth people they had taken away, the population were
