Christian views on extraterrestrial life – Part 2
By admin On July 13th, 2009The Bible does speak of extraterrestrial life. Angels and demons are extraterrestrial and probably extradimensional. God, himself, is even “extrauniversal” if you think about it.
If one felt the need to go all “Ancient Astronauts” you could play in the speculation fields of scripture-twisting and say many of the visions of the prophets, and even John, could be speaking of aliens. I don’t think I’d go that far, but I’m sure we’d all trip down that road if E.T. dropped in for a visit (though many would accuse them of being demons in disguise).
Ultimately, due to problems with superluminal speeds, I doubt we’ll ever see any aliens from outer space. I think the silence of Scripture on the subject means we will never encounter them – the Bible is God’s Holy Instruction Manual for people, not animals, aliens, or Michael Jackson. It is not a Universal Encyclopedia, so unless we were to expect outer space drop-ins, Scripture would be silent on the matter.
Does that mean there are no out-of-this-world mortals (as opposed to angels and demons)? No, it just means it’s irrelevant. I’d like to think there are peopled planets besides our own, and if there are I hope to be allowed to explore them on the other side of this life, but beyond fiction and daydreaming, there’s little use for that hope here. For now, the question is akin to “what color is music?” It’s completely unanswerable from our frame of reference.
