Assessing UFO conspiracy theories – Part 8
By admin On March 4th, 2010Why do so many relatively normal, sane individuals seem to honestly believe in UFO conspiracy theories? They are often lumped together in the same category as Bigfoot crackpots and crop-circle hoaxers. They are often treated as troublemakers and irritants rather than taken seriously in any way. But someone who honestly believes in any conspiracy theory, even a UFO conspiracy theory, is usually a normal, sane person.
We all feel like an alien from another planet at times. We often seem like the only sane person in a world full of lunatics. This can make us feel scared, helpless and even suicidal. Sometimes conspiracy theories, like UFO conspiracy theories, can be a very comforting explanation for why we feel so alienated from our own species and culture.

In the past, our ancestors used mythology and magic in order to try and make some sense of the inherent senselessness of their world. A lot of ancient mythologies like Greek, Babylonian and Jewish mythology begin with Chaos as the first element. Creation was when a Creator put order to Chaos. Chaos is usually portrayed as frightening or somehow evil, while Order was portrayed as just the opposite.
This is still seen today in many ways, like with organized religion, even more organized science and with conspiracy theories. They are a creative coping mechanism to the inherent frightening disorder we see all around us. They help give us sense to the senselessness of life.
In UFO conspiracy theories, fear of being helpless or being lied to by those in charge are manifested. History has taught us about the misery caused by governments lying to people and having complete control over their lives. We still see senseless acts done to promote suffering all of the time. We are caught between the urge to rebel and the urge to quietly comply and risk getting hurt so we can survive.
UFO conspiracy theories give a common bond and a sense of identity and purpose to people. They have found their own community where they are free to express their honest opinions safely. We all need to ask difficult questions in order to stay mentally, spiritually and physically healthy. But it’s very hard to find the right person to ask those questions to.
People who believe in UFO conspiracy theories should not be laughed at or pitied. They should be listened to. Things you believe in (like your chosen Deity) might seem just as laughable and pitiable to them. All mythologies start with a kernel of truth. Perhaps there is something to what they say that needs listening to.
And who knows; if they happen to be right and UFOs have been visiting the Earth with our government’s full consent, breeding hybrids for alien experiments, then at least they can say, “Told you so.”
